Dehydrate Food: The Easy Way!

  • On our fruit and vegetable pages, learn how long and at what temperature to dehydrate everything safely - from apples to zucchinis.
  • Learn how to safely dehydrate meats (see our free beef jerky recipe), plus seafood (shrimp, tuna, and salmon).
  • Check out the equipment needed, and supplies. Don't worry, it's not a lot!

Mastering the Basics: Essential Equipment and Storage Tips
for Learning How to Dehydrate Food Successfully

Here's a short list of the basics: An electric dehydrator such as a Nesco or an Excalibur Dehydrator and a food vacuum sealer like my FoodSaver Vacuum Sealer.

Excalibur brand dehydrator - 4-tray starter model
FoodSaver brand food vacuum sealing machine

Use the Right Containers for Dried Food for Long- or Short-Term Storage

For long-term storage, you must use Oxygen Absorbers to help protect your dehydrated goodies because they slow oxidation (where things turn brown) and regulate moisture (because they absorb it) which inhibits mold. Plus they take care of pesky pests. (Try saying that five times fast).

Use a food vacuum sealer to draw the air out of the bags, plus they do a fantastic job of sealing the bag tight... air tight, that is!

Mason Jars for storing dried food
Mylar Bags for storing packages of dried food
